Documenting your fitness journey can be extremely helpful for many reasons. Writing your fitness goals and achievements in a journey will help you to clarify exactly what you want to achieve, which helps guide your daily actions towards goal achievement. The following are the key important elements of a fitness journal.

Planning: Arguably the most important part of any fitness journey is creating a plan. Start with your goals – Think about where you want to be in 3 months, 6 months, 1 year. Create a plan as to how you want to achieve these goals. Plan your workouts and nutrition weekly to ensure you can follow your program to keep moving forward!

Progression: Documenting your workouts will allow you to track your progression, see what actions need adjusting or modifications which will help you continue working toward your goals. Seeing weight progression can also help predict how much weight you can push for a 3-rep max test if your goal is to test your strength.

Accountability: When it comes to goal setting, accountability means being held responsible for the achievement of your goals. Using a fitness journey can be seen as a way of tracking success, accountability can create a sense of ownership and pride that often leads to great triumph, enhancing your ability to achieve your desired outcomes.

Motivation: Sticking to your workout plan can be difficult, staying motivated is key! Documenting your changes can show where you started, and where you are now. Looking at numbers on a scale doesn’t always show how much progress you’ve made – it’s important to take photos, write down weight progressions and document small victories such as running for an extra 2 minutes.

There is no right or wrong way to document your fitness journey, choose methods that you feel comfortable with and can do consistently. You may feel it’s a hassle the first few weeks but as you build the habit it can become second nature; many people feel grateful for where they are when they can look back and see all the progress made!
