Soak Up the Sun: Exercise Tips for the Outdoors

With warm weather and sunshine finally here to stay, many of us are spending more time outside to get our movement in with things like hiking and biking. Being outdoors can be beneficial in several ways, however there are also precautions to take while being outside this summer. To help keep you active and safe, we have put together a list of benefits of exercising outside, and how to stay healthy and safe under the sun!

Benefits of exercising outdoors.

Improved mood – Studies have shown that spending time in nature can boost serotonin levels, or our feel-good hormone, and make us feel happier and less stressed!

Increased Vitamin D – Exercising outside in the sun is a great way to soak up Vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and can prevent disease.

Varied terrain – The various terrains outside can be a great way to push yourself and change up your routine when it comes to walking, running, and biking!

Improved sleep – Regular exercise and fresh air can help improve your sleep quality.

Tips to stay safe outside this summer.

·       Wear sunscreen, reapply every hour you are in the sun.

·       Wear light coloured, breathable clothing.

·       Drink lots of water to stay hydrated.

·       Wear a hat to protect your head from the sun.

·       Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes in the sun.

·       Include lots of vegetables and fruits in your diet to increase water consumption.

Year round on Tuesdays at 6:30pm the club meets at The Academy on 11th Avenue. Typically running routes average from 40-50 minutes with a mix of jogging and walking at pre-set intervals, at the slowest person's pace. Sometimes you will end up walking a little more!

The Slow Girl Run Club is about women getting outside, feeling safe and confident in a group. It's positive, social, and supportive. If you are an advanced runner, this time can be used as an active recovery session and if you've never run before this is a great way to start! All levels of fitness are welcome, it's all about having fun and moving your body.
