“And suddenly you know, it’s time to start something new and trust the magic of new beginnings.” Meister Eckhart

One of the greatest things about a new year, is that it represents new beginnings. An opportunity to take on a new venture.
What is that new beginning for you? Are you an avid fitness buff, love working out, being part of a community, helping others and continually challenging yourself and your skills? Perhaps consider a new career in fitness. Many of the fitness folks that I know started out as avid participants (including me). I remember going to my first ‘aerobics class’ in the late 80’s and thinking ‘this is fantastic’, I was hooked!
Becoming a group fitness instructor leader is extremely rewarding. It is an opportunity to share your passion for health and wellness with others and be a positive influence in their life. The fitness industry is energetic, positive, and extremely rewarding. If you have been thinking of a new beginning and creating a part-time or full-time career in fitness let me help you get started.
3 easy steps to get on the path to becoming a fitness certified professional:
1. Decide what type of certification you desire
What is your passion? What do you want to share with the world? It’s usually a great place to start. Some of the most popular options are group exercise, cycle, teaching older adults, resistance training, yoga, Pilates, fusion workouts, and aqua-fit.
Certification through an accredited organization is the first step. If you’re going to teach or train other people, it’s imperative that you have a solid grasp on training principals and standards. Even if you have a related degree in health and fitness, the education you will receive in a specialized certification course will give you the skills to teach group fitness classes and work with clients.
2. Seek out reputable organizations to obtain your certification
There are several certification bodies however not all of them are created equally. At the Academy we are an accredited certification organization through Fitness Alberta (powered by the AFLCA) provincial certifications. This provincially recognized certification is a non-profit organization, committed to standard and professionalism under the guidelines of the national benchmarks and standards for qualification to be registered on the Fit Directory for qualified exercise professionals. This certification provides the evidence-informed trainings, standards and insurance needed to get out there and teach.
3. Sign up!!
No experience necessary. To get started you just need to have the desire to try something new.
The options are endless when it comes to health and fitness. Start with the basic training in the foundations in physical activity, anatomy, physiology, and exercise science. Once you’ve got that, you can then decide which specialty you’d like to pursue, group fitness, indoor cycling, mind body training and more. And even if you don’t decide to become a leader, the knowledge and education obtained will only enhance your own personal training goals.
The Academy is a Fitness Alberta approved certification provider and we have a lot of these courses running starting January 14th through to the end of the year.
